Mead Orchards is the Mead family's picturesque, 210-acre fruit orchard and vegetable farm, located in Tivoli, NY. They've been there since 1916, and now grow early 40 varieties of apples, as well as peaches, plums, pears, cherries, and berries. They also grow a wide variety of delicious greens, summer vegetables, winter squashes and pumpkins, and make their own honey, cider, jams, and sauces.
Chuck has been farming for almost 40 years, and the farm has been in the Mead family (owned and operated) since 1916. Chuck’s father began farming strawberries and apples, which he shipped overnight by riverboat down the Hudson River. He specializes in tree fruits, along with berries and vegetables. They grow many new varieties of apples and pears, all non-GMO. Mead pays special attention to erosion prevention, uses cover crops, and drip irrigation to conserve water. They use Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) on the farm. Chuck is concerned about increased soil fertility and health in order to reduce the use of chemical inputs. His plans for 2015 is to begin a composting program on the farm.
